The Campaign
Our Children Deserve to be free from Political Mandates!
The time has come to reclaim the promise of public education--to free local schools, teachers, and students from the political mandates of testing.
As a parent of school aged children, as well as a teacher, it has become apparent to me that we have now crossed the threshold in which the amount of time spent testing our children, and analyzing those test results, no longer supports the mission of learning. We have too many unfinished goals to monopolize our time and energy teaching to tests.
We must remember that our schools are more than testing facilities. Each and every day students accomplish remarkable milestones in their lives because of Volusia County Schools. I know, I witness this as both a teacher and as a parent of Volusia County students. Yet, I also know we can always improve. We can always do better.
The Biography
Our Children Deserve an Experienced Educator and K-12 Parent!
My name is Don Sarro and I am running for the District 1 seat for Volusia County School Board. My wife Rachel and I are both teachers in Volusia County and call this county our home, each of us growing up in Orange City. Yet, we're not just teachers and fond of our heritage here in Volusia County, but parents of twin preschool daughters, a middle school son, and an older daughter in high school. To say the least, Rachel and I both have a strong interest in the success of our schools, not just as teachers, but also as parents. We choose to send our kids to Volusia County Schools because we believe in the value of a public education.
As a candidate for School Board, I bring more than 20 years experience in K-12 education. Six of those years I worked with educational publishing and assessment companies. The other 16 years I have taught social studies at the secondary level, while my wife Rachel has taught almost 15 years in ESE with the Deaf/Hard of Hearing. My formal education includes two master's degrees: Social Science Education (University of Central Florida); Educational Leadership (Stetson University). This experience as a K-12 educator with advanced degrees fills a critical need that our current board lacks.
Don't we want board members that have a strong vested interest in the success of our schools, such as an experienced educator? Don't we want a parent with school aged children in our public schools?
Vote Don Sarro for School Board District 1!
The only District 1 candidate who is a public school parent and educator.
